“Music Memories And Good Old Fashion Meloney Magic”
Music Memories and Good Old Fashioned Meloney
Magic” is associated to one and only
Derek Meloney.
The man with the golden voice, who was on the airwaves of the Sri Lanka
Broadcasting Corporation.
Hello everyone and welcome to the
official Meloney Magic web site it is the intention of the presenter that
those logging on will get a special insight into Derek Meloney the man
behind the persona of the man behind the microphone. Derek tells you the
story
It was the year 1962 when first I
walked into the studios of Radio Ceylon. it was as a 13 year old schoolboy
lucky to be picked for the Wesley College school choir that made that
first entry to one of the most famous buildings in the Indian sub
continent. This was Radio Ceylon the home of some of Asia’s best known
broadcasters. Livy Wijamanne, Jimmy Barucha, Shirley Perera, Mil Sansoni,
Chris Greet, Leon Belleth, Nihal Bharetti. This was the place where I
would meet "The Movie Man About Town", Jimmy Barucha, happy go lucky Greg
Roskoskie, Gingernut Vernon Corea and shortcake Leon Belleth and the great
Livy Wijemanne, the man who's voice was on air when Tenszing and Hillary
received Radio Ceylon on their tiny transistor radio from atop Mt Everest.
I was at Radio Ceylon the station that entertained listners not just in
Ceylon, but all over the Asian sub continent.
After this brief foray, came an
intense desire to be a part of this empire, and empire it was, filled with
people who were feircely possesive of their place of work and of the image
it gave them. It was a few years later that I was introduced to the
original "Mystique" of commercial radio Chris Greet, Chris was presenting
a series of programmes for the English National Service and was in need of
young voices for these programmes. So it began the love affair with the
microphone, the only successful love affair to date. I was privileged to
catch the eye of Hector Jayasinhe who was the head of Drama Section of the
Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation, and so it was not long before I started
attending the Corporations training institute down Jawatte Road. I believe
it was my drama background under the care of B.B.C. radio's Stewart Wavell
and John Hunt that contributed immensely to my broadcasting experience.
Soon I was on the way to becoming a guest producer English National
Service and so followed the programmes Radio Quiz Club, Just For Fun, The
Soul Searchers and Lets Spin A Disc. These programmes were co-hosted by me
with such radio personalities as Christine Blackler, Irangani Goonasinhe
and Rohini Muthukrishna and Chris Greet.
It was around 1974 whilst working
for Lloyd's advertising services, I decided to apply for a position of
relief announcer, to my amazement I was one of the lucky few, but alas my endeavours were all but lost, as the rules of engagement were that
advertising agency staff were not permitted to work the commercial beams,
a rule I found hard to accept. I was entirely out in the cold as my voice
was now approved to present commercial programmes for clients of the
agency I represented, my co-habitation with the stations best known
producer Harold Fernando was about to begin and so the commercial world of
radio saw Derek Meloney team up with Leon Belleth to present programmes.
It was the beginning of the advent of "Music Memories and Good Old
Fashioned Meloney Magic". By this time I had caught the attention of Jimmy
Barucha and Shirley Perera who seemed to have unstilted faith in my
ability as a commercial broadcaster and who never missed the opportunity
to remind me that the day I leave the agency I could return to the panel
of announcers on the commercial beam. This was incentive enough for me and
in the year 1977 Music Memories And Good Old Fashioned Meloney Magic was
heard on the commercial service on a regular basis. During this period
some of the most popular commercial service programmes went to air with
yours truly behind the mike and with help on occasions from V Rajendra, better known as Raj to his fans.
Mine has been a successful career,
one that I have neither abandoned nor terminated I wish to place on record
my sincere appreciation to the countless listeners who enjoy my work. Mr
Shirley Perera for his faith in me, his understanding and his
determination Mr Jimmy Barucha and Mr Vijaya Corea for their guidance and
council at difficult times. Most importantly Mr Harold L. Fernando who's
association with me over the years has been nothing short of relentless.
Harold himself one of the stations most senior broadcasters has been my
beacon of light, producer, script writer, researcher, compiler and on
occasions the object of my humour.
Friends
I have been very fortunate to have worked with, served under and been guided by
some of Sri Lanka’s best ever broadcasters. I try to make regular trips to Sri
Lanka when I do I take my place behind the microphone at the S.L.B.C. It is an
homecoming I much look forward to. I have spent the last 19 years in Perth - 15
of the last 19 years in the public service and part time broadcasting with the
overseas service of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I make the
occasional appearance on the ethinic radio stations. Presently,I am at the
crossroads of my life in more ways than one., do I accept the offer of work with
Perth's 90.5 Capital Radio or do I heed the call of my fan's in Sri Lanka.
Thank you to Sisira
Chandrasekera, the legendry operations assistant of the 70's & 80's and to the
fan's who termed the phase "Music Memories & Good Old Fashion Meloney Magic ".
Thanks also to the present announcers covering all radio stations, some of whom
I do not know, we all share one thing in common a love for broadcasting. I now
represent Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and Sri Lanka Rupavahini
Corporation as a Foreign Correspondent.
